Application Update on Windows

During the update, the previous version of AmneziaVPN will be uninstalled from your system. This process will not delete the connections created in the app or reset the app settings, including split tunneling settings.

To keep your connections and app settings safe, you can create a backup at any time: Backup and Restore.

Below are the steps for checking whether a new version of AmneziaVPN is available and updating the app.

How to prepare for the update

1. Open AmneziaVPN and go to settings using the ⚙️ (gear icon) on the bottom panel.
2. Go to About AmneziaVPN.
3. At the bottom of the screen, you will see the current app version. Note it down and click Check for updates.

After that, the latest stable AmneziaVPN release page will open in your browser: github.com/amnezia-vpn/amnezia-client/releases/latest.

If your version is older than the version on GitHub, you need to update the app. For example, you have AmneziaVPN 4.8.17.0, and 4.8.19.0 is available on GitHub.

4. Find the .exe file on the GitHub release page and download it.

5. Go back to the AmneziaVPN app, open settings, and click Close application.

Updating the app

1. Run the downloaded .exe file. In the pop-up window, click OK to start uninstalling the installed version of AmneziaVPN.

2. Click Next.

3. Click Uninstall.

4. If Windows asks for permission to make changes to your device, click Yes.

5. When the uninstall process is complete, click Finish.

6. After AmneziaVPN is uninstalled, the installer for the new app version will open. Click Next.

7. Click Install.

For AmneziaVPN to work correctly, the installation path cannot be changed.

Default path: C:\Program Files\AmneziaVPN.

8. If Windows asks for permission to make changes to your device, click Yes.

When the installation is complete, the AmneziaVPN app will open automatically. We recommend restarting your device after installing the update. After that, you can connect.

Possible update issue

When updating AmneziaVPN, you may see this error:

AmneziaVPN is active. Close the app and press "Retry" button to continue installation. Press "Abort" button to abort the installer and exit.

This error appears when you open the .exe installer while AmneziaVPN is still running, so the reinstallation process cannot start.

How to fix it:

1. Find the AmneziaVPN icon in the system tray in the bottom-right corner of the screen, right-click it, and click Quit AmneziaVPN.

If there is no AmneziaVPN icon in the system tray, restart Windows and open the .exe installer again. Download it from the latest stable AmneziaVPN release page on GitHub: github.com/amnezia-vpn/amnezia-client/releases/latest.

2. In the error window, click Retry. If you previously clicked Abort, open the installer again.

3. If AmneziaVPN closed successfully, you will see this message:

The application is already installed. We need to remove the old installation first. Do you wish to proceed?

Click OK and continue with the steps in Updating the app above.
