AmneziaDNS on a Server
Overview
AmneziaDNS is a service that AmneziaVPN installs on your server. It runs a DNS resolver inside the server Docker network and lets VPN clients send DNS queries through the VPN tunnel instead of using the DNS servers of the local ISP.
This helps reduce the risk of DNS request leaks, avoid DNS filtering or DNS tampering by the local network, and keep the VPN connection independent from DNS settings on the device.
AmneziaDNS does not turn your server into a public DNS server. The app automatically uses the internal service address on the server, and the service resolves domains through an encrypted connection to Cloudflare DNS by default.
If AmneziaDNS is not installed or is turned off, the connection uses the addresses from the DNS servers setting.
Installing AmneziaDNS
- On the main screen, click the server name, then click ⚙️ (gear icon) next to the server.
- Go to the Services tab, select AmneziaDNS, and click Install.
Enabling AmneziaDNS
After the service is installed, enable it in the connection settings:
- Go to Settings → Connection.
- Turn on Use AmneziaDNS.
Now DNS requests from the VPN connection will be sent to AmneziaDNS inside the VPN tunnel.
