I've downloaded the application, what's next?
Next, you need to enter the data of your virtual private server (VPS). You can use the data of an existing VPS or purchase a new one.
On the website in the section "How to start your VPN," there are step-by-step instructions for choosing and purchasing hosting from different providers. All instructions are provided as an example, hosting and providers can be absolutely any.
After you purchase the server and enter the data into the application, choose the level of censorship in your region, and the application will automatically install the necessary protocol. Later, you can change it or install any other.
I want to buy a VPS, what options should I choose?
- Operating system - Linux, Ubuntu 22.04, or Debian 11
- Virtualization - KVM
- Supported CPU architecture - x86-64
- Server address with internet protocol IPv4
- Random Access Memory (RAM) - not less than 1 GB
- Pre-installed software and control panel are not required
Which VPN protocol to choose?
IMPORTANT! If your country has a very high level of internet control, access to many sites is blocked, and no commercial or free VPNs and VPN protocols work, we recommend using only AmneziaWG from the first connection and enabling the SplitTunneling function for some sites so that some traffic goes through your real IP address.
If VPN is not blocked in your region, you can choose any of the presented protocols at your discretion.
Which network protocol to choose UDP or TCP?
If you have chosen OpenVPN, you may be wondering which network protocol is better to use, UDP or TCP.
UDP - provides good speed to your traffic, however, such connections may lose data packets during transmission, as they are not checked. This network protocol is suitable for watching videos, online games, or video conferences, where the loss of a few packets will not have a significant impact on the overall connection.
TCP - a slower protocol, but it does not lose packets. It is recommended to use it for something less resource-intensive, such as email, browsing web pages, and transferring small files.
You can change the network port through the protocol settings.
I want to use VPN, but not for all websites. What can I do?
Amnezia has a "Split VPN tunneling" feature, with which you can add two lists. The first list is the sites that should be opened through VPN. The second list is the exception sites for VPN. After adding the necessary addresses to the list, you can use one of them. More details in the instruction - split tunneling.
Can I use key-based authentication in Amnezia?
Yes, both password and key-based authentication are supported. Supported types of OpenSSH keys: RSA (2048, 3072, 4096) and ECDSA (nistp256).
How do I change the masking site for the Cloak plugin?
Go to the server settings, to do this click on the name of your server on the main screen, click on the gear icon next to the name, select OpenVPN Over Cloak then Cloak, replace the masking site, click save, and restart.
Why change DNS?
Traffic analysis systems can identify the country of traffic not only by external IP but also by your DNS address, so for a more private connection, it is better to change it. The simplest protection method will be installing the AmneziaDNS service.
How to reinstall the application and not lose server settings?
When reinstalling the Amnezia application, all added servers and protocols in the operating system will be saved. If you want to reinstall the OS, for example, Mac OS or Windows, then we recommend making a backup beforehand and saving the backup file on an external drive or in the cloud.
How to share VPN with others?
Amnezia allows you to share VPN with an unlimited number of users you trust. To share VPN, click on the share icon on the bottom panel, select the protocol, and click "Share," the program will save the file to your device. Pass this file on to those you want to share with. To use the file, on the main screen click "I have connection data," select "connect using a file," then select the file on your device. More details in the instruction - Share VPN.
How to share VPN access with other devices?
You can share access only for connection by clicking on the "Share" icon on the bottom panel. Then select the server and protocol you want to share. Save and pass the configuration as a file to the second device, or scan the QR code. More details in the instruction - Share VPN.
How to change the VPN protocol port?
To change the VPN protocol port, go to the protocol settings (settings → servers → select server → select protocol → change port).

How to find out the application release number?
To find out the application release number, click on the settings icon on the bottom panel, then select "About AmneziaVPN" and scroll down.
